About this artwork
I love being at the sea. Here it is the Baltic Sea near Kiel, where I often go with my family. My niece took a photo in the evening when the weather was bad and gave me the motif to paint. We both find bad weather beautiful too.
I painted it on a reddish-brown underpainting on a wooden surface. Painting it was a very harmonious process because the colors go together. It brings the vastness of the sea into your room.

« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
