About this artwork
Inspired by two works by Picasso, "The Overturned Bullfighter" and "The Lobster and the Cat." Here I express the tension of bullfighting transposed into the absurdity and suddenness of a domestic scene. I express surprise, fear, aggression, with a tragicomic dimension. The intense drama of bullfighting is applied to a conflict with a simple cat, creating a humorous and surreal shift. I tell a fascinating story that merges two of Picasso's universes.… The human character, the "Overturned Bullfighter," not by the power of a bull, but by the unexpected fury of a domestic cat. The cat takes up the aggressive and primal posture of the feline in "The Lobster and the Cat," defending its territory. The story is a parody and a humorous nod to the great themes of life, death, and violence dear to Picasso, bringing them down to the scale of an apartment. It tells us that drama, fear, and confrontation can arise from the most banal situations
Born in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, William Marcheval is a polymorphic artist, moving from painting to computer graphics. He practices glazing and sfumato, approaching Impressionism with a touch of naiveté. His constantly evolving works combine realism and abstraction, exploring themes such as tenderness and humanism. Marcheval seeks to evoke wonder, questioning, and escape through his artwork.
