A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Chien-Li Chen’s paintings have a quietness that initially makes them feel almost spare, but the surfaces are much more active than they first appear. Color is built through countless small marks, while translucent geometric forms overlap and interrupt one another. Shapes seem to move forward and recede, making it difficult to settle on a single reading of the space.
Some areas feel almost architectural—like corners, walls, or planes seen from an unusual angle—while others flatten into fields of color. The grain of the painted surface softens that geometry, giving otherwise precise forms a slight instability.
‘Afterimage’ brings together works where this shifting quality feels especially present. Colors seem to linger behind one another, and forms carry traces of what has passed over them. Chen gives us very little recognizable imagery, yet the paintings hold your attention through color, overlap, and the sense that something is still changing the longer you look.
