About this artwork
This work will become available after my exhibition in autumn 2026.
'Genesis' is an artwork in six panels, to be hung as photographed or in a row.
The Creation story and visual language from medieval paintings of the Virgin Mary create a framework for a narrative of conception and birth.
I have used medieval painting techniques - wooden panels, gesso, water-gilding and hand-ground egg tempera - to contribute to a sense of history and to transfer… religious awe to a contemporary, secular context. The gilding has been embellished with punchwork and the surfaces have been animated with pastiglia (gesso sculpted into low relief).
The work is a complex examination of themes which pervade all of my work: spirituality, the forces that govern the natural world and the relationship between man and nature.
Each painting is titled with a quotation from the book of Genesis, beginning with the appearance of a vault in the heavens and continuing to the creation of living creatures.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
