This miniature, decorative painting gives an intimate sense of shelter and safety. The sleeping mouse, curled into a tight ball, is encircled by the golden wheat, which seems to hide and protect it. The painting is an expression of tenderness and gentleness in a world which feels harsh and dangerous.
The mouse is rendered in hand-made egg tempera paint, with dry pigments ground in egg yolk. The grains of wheat have been modelled in the same gesso… that was used for the ground layer of the painting. All of the gilded areas have been coated with red bole and covered with two layers of gold leaf, which were then burnished to a deep sheen.
The support is a solid oak panel with a fixed, distressed frame. The dimensions given include the frame.
The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
