About this artwork
This egg tempera painting with gold leaf on an oak panel is a gently humorous portrait of a frog.
Two blades of grass are rendered in water gilding - gold leaf laid on red bole and burnished to a high sheen. A small fly perches on the bending head of one blade of grass, out of range of the frog, which stands on its hind legs, straining upwards and reaching with its tongue to try to catch it.
The title, 'HighTea', is a pun: 'high tea' is sometimes… used in the UK to refer to an evening meal but here, the fly is too high for the frog.
The frog, which takes centre stage in this painting, also appears as a small player in the painting 'On the Ground, They Crawl Unseen', in the series 'Abundance'.
The painting has an exposed wood border (included in the given dimensions) so that it can be displayed unframed, for example on a mini easel. It can also be framed to make it more imposing. It is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
