About this artwork
In autumn, when signs of life are disappearing on top of the ground, thoughts turn to the life hidden from our eyes, under the ground. This painting celebrates the strange, unconventionally beautiful creatures which can be unsettling. Here, we are invited to examine weevils, centipedes and other insects and small animals in minute detail; the teeming, colourful life under the deep red earth waiting to burst from the surface as the magnificent sun… beats down. In the centre is a large, stylised scorpion, at once repellent and alluring.
The painting is on an oak panel, prepared with gesso and water gilded. The gesso was incised before the application of bole and gilding to create the arcs of the sun and the gold leaf was punched to make it sparkle in the light. The paint was made by grinding raw pigments in egg tempera.
The painting is signed on the reverse and has a ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
This painting was selected for the Dourdan Salon de Printemps 2021.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
