Location: Lake Abraham, Canada
Lake Abraham extends over an area of 54 square kilometres, it lies on the edge of Banff National Park. It was still dark as I started walking on it. At that moment the minus 30 degrees Celsius felt as bitterly cold as they sound. The crampons crunched and broke the silence as they bored down into the ice. Although the ice was supposedly up to 30 centimetres thick, I was full of respect for this vast area, shimmering… like an enormous obsidian. The ice under my feet creaked and groaned like an old wooden floor. I could not ignore my feelings of unease. Suddenly, there was a cracking noise as if the ground were about to open up. The sun was just rising when I saw that the ice directly beneath me had split open as far as the horizon. The resulting fissure had given me a tremendous fright, but it made a remarkable subject for a photograph.
