Location: Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brasil
On the north-east coast of Brazil, in Maranhão State, wind and water create a constantly changing landscape of sand. North of Barreirinhas there are shifting sand dunes covering 1,550 square kilometres along an 80-kilometre stretch of coast and up to 50 kilometres inland. Then, during the rainy season, they are criss-crossed by a labyrinth of crystal-clear freshwater lagoons, some up to 90 metres… long and three metres deep. The dunes, which the locals call “Lençóis Maranhenses” – the bed sheets of Maranhão – have been a National Park since 1981.
