About this artwork
In the summer I often go to the Baltic Sea with my family. One evening after a long and beautiful day at the beach I went for a walk along the sea, collecting shells and beautiful stones. In the early twilight I took photos of the sea. I was fascinated by the different colors: light orange and light brown in the middle of all the blue and gray tones. I painted the picture in oil based on these photos. Some areas have the colors of the seabed, others… the colors of the water and the reflection of the sky. The spray from the small waves has a very fine light orange from the setting sun.
While painting, I also discovered the play of shadows on the beach. The shells and stones cast shadows and at the same time, in another direction, they have channels of water flowing back towards the sea. For a while, I thought this type of picture was almost impossible to paint: now I've tried it and I really like the result. It brings with it the vastness and gentleness of the sea.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
