About this artwork
Ulla Kutter painted the Plage du Prado near Marseille here. The main concern of the picture is to depict the warm atmosphere and light of the summer evening. The colors of the sunset come into their own in many glazes of oil paint. Even the sea and the beach reflect these soft warm tones. Opposite what is happening on the beach is a multicolored dark scrub, behind it the Ferris wheel. Through these different elements, an exciting image structure…
has been achieved.
Kutter only hints at a lot in the background and the underpainting in bright orange shines through. This technique of working with an underpainting allows for the density and warmth of the resulting atmosphere.
