Root Stem Vase is both sculptural and functional and is inspired by the shape of a weathered tree stump. Vertical sheets of 4 mm. thick sterling have been constructed so that, in cross-section on top, they accurately render the Chinese symbol for the word "root". Three of the openings in this symbol are water-tight and serve as a vase. At the bottom, the tree stump is literally rooted around an actual rock, which is a fossil that I found as a… child. It contains fossilized coral most likely from the extinct genus Spyringopora dating from between 420 and 360 million years ago. Next to the rock all around the base of the stump, I have constructed the effect of moss using multiple 14 k. yellow gold spheres and synthetic emeralds. Tucked into this texture at the front is carved a little entrance to a mouse's house. The rock can be removed in order to polish the sterling, and a specialized screw-driver is included with the sale. Root Stem Vase took 448 hours to create.
