Stem Vase with Textures was smithed from sterling sheet so that the inside surface of the base becomes the outside on the stem. The pure silver texture within the base was partially melted and partially carved. It looks like a garden embedded with black onyx beads, brilliant green sphene and sphalerite gemstones, and a carved amber blossom with central sphene and green gold leaves. Sphene and sphalerite have a higher refractive index than diamond.… Green sphalerite is very rare in this colour and at this size (12 mm. diameter). I carved the amber blossom when I was 18, then it waited patiently to be set in this piece 40 years later. The reddish amber is perfectly opposite on the colour wheel to the green gems and green gold. The texture on the back renders the vase water-tight and is constructed out of multiple freeform shapes in pure silver and green gold, plus onxy beads. Stem Vase with Textures took 315 hours to create. The process is shown on my website (wesleyharris.ca).
