About this artwork
The Unruly Garden was inspired by the quiet comfort that nature can bring when life feels busy, complicated or overwhelming. I wanted this painting to feel untamed and authentic, like a garden that has been allowed to grow freely according to its own rhythm rather than being carefully controlled or arranged.
As I worked, I embraced the unpredictable nature of the paint, allowing drips, splashes and layers of colour to find their own path across… the canvas. The flowers emerge naturally from the expressive marks, full of movement, character and life. There is a richness and density in the lower half of the composition where colour and energy gather together, gradually giving way to a more open and spacious area above.
That sense of openness felt important to me. It creates room for reflection and balance, a place where the eye can rest amongst the abundance below. For me, this painting is about accepting imperfection and finding beauty in what is wild and unresolved.
