About this artwork
We came across this committee of white backed vultures near a small water body at the Nairobi National Park, Kenya. It was a preening session by the water that had brought them all together. Vultures have always been high on our list of favorite photo subjects. We watched them as they drank from the pond and then flew to a nearby mound, where they spread their wings in an attempt to dry their feathers. The heavy clouds and their naturally grim and…
wizened appearance brought up images of a bench of grim judges waiting to pass sentence on some unfortunate animal.
Their being on a mound meant that we could get lower than eye-level, further elevating their stature in the picture. In processing this image, we went for a higher level of contrast and texture so as to accentuate the mood of grim judgment. We also opted for a slightly panoramic crop to mimic a bench of judges.
