About this artwork
In this painting I portray two ladies with a conceited air, as if the world were their carpet and the sky a mere backdrop for their petulance. One holds the little dog with jeweled hands, as if it were the most rancid trophy, wrapped in furs, she smokes with the gesture of a weary empress. I wanted the little dog to appear with an expression as haughty as that of its owners, because there is no creature more proud than the one who looks at itself… in the mirror of another's vanity. The blue background, clear and almost innocent, contrasts with the scene, underlining the irony of so much worldly tinsel. Thus, with a caustic brushstroke, I show an altarpiece of vanities where the "posh dog" stands as a symbol of exalted frivolity, reminding us that, in this theatre, barking is not always the most hollow voice.
Eusebio San Blanco explores art with oil and tempera techniques, and his teaching experience in anatomy reflects his mastery of figuration. His style is a fabric of figurative expressionism, nourished by traditional procedures and glazes that evoke deep emotions. His works are a vibrant dialogue between form and feeling, inviting introspective contemplation.
