The painting hangs silently, but it is not still: it watches.
Within the frame, the red figure acts as a sentinel of an old-fashioned hall.
It looks like a noble portrait, although its nobility has something of a trick and a bit of theatricality about it.
The wall, with its shadows and ornaments almost erased, feigns discretion.
The horizontal rope marks a poor boundary, like a makeshift museum.
The observer believes they are entering the scene,… but is soon marked by it.
The character does not pose: he stalks with the patience of a grumpy relic.
Red, once again, reigns supreme from the golden confines of the frame.
There is here a satire of prestige, of the cultured gaze and of its petty vanities.
Because this portrait doesn't ask for admiration: it looks back and charges interest.
