About this artwork
Here I freeze a scene of trivialized desire, where artifice takes control of eroticism. I arrange the figures in a theatrical and suffocating frame, as if the scene were taking place in a dressing room saturated with gestures. The composition separates the protagonists by an implicit line that confronts them: one shows off, the other licks her lips. The figure in the foreground licks her ice cream like someone who believes she has mastered her pleasure,…
unaware of its grotesque caricature. The other, with red gloves and decorated breasts, dances between the burlesque and the pathetic. The corsets and stockings act more like armor than sensual adornments: there is no desire here, there is spectacle. The entire painting exudes a bitter irony: the feigned freedom of enjoyment sold in a shop window. There is no freshness in the ice cream, only a glazed ritual of automatisms. This scene does not seduce: it interrogates us with its tongue out and its eyelids drooping. I thus ridicule the empty promise of instant pleasure and the histrionics of domesticated eroticism.
