About this artwork
The box opens onto the actual work. At the top, a real palette—used, stained with paint, with the brushstrokes still fresh from a session that was never quite finished. It's not a representation of the palette: it is the palette. At the bottom, the painter's face: a relief cast, with a brush running through the mouth. The tool and the face are one and the same.
The coral-red that colors the box, the face, and the background unifies the two sides… in a single color. There is no separation between the painter and what he paints, between gesture and identity. The painter is the color. The color is the painter.
Each copy of this work is chromatically unique: Cecconello manually intervenes on each copy, making each treasure chest unrepeatable in its palette.
Part of the Scrigni series—openable boxes that preserve the artist's identity and the memory of the creative gesture, placed facing each other inside a box that can be opened and closed.

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
At over eighty years old, he still works every day in his studio in Salussola, Biella.
