About this artwork
As I walked through the narrow streets of Catania, Italy, I noticed someone on a rooftop balcony gazing out over the rooftops of the old town. I captured this moment and translated it into an acrylic painting. While the building in my painting is made of stone and mortar, it also serves as a canvas for the stories that unfold within and around it. The facade tells the story of its inhabitants, such as the young man on the rooftop balcony smoking…
a cigarette and gazing into the distance, and the laundry hanging below on another resident's railing. The creases in the paper, combined with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, add layers of depth to the painting, reflecting the complexity of human emotions and interactions.
