About this artwork
Few images capture the soul of our island better than the silhouette of Dalt Vila rising from the sea. This piece was born from a morning in Marina Botafoc, watching the first rays of sunlight touch the limestone of the ramparts, transforming the gray of the bastion into an explosion of pinks, ochres, and golds.
In this work, I've taken my artistic language toward a freer form of figurative abstraction. I wasn't interested in depicting the windows… or stones of the city, but rather in capturing the vibration of the air at that precise moment. I used very short, impasto, and 'dissolved' brushstrokes, almost like a mosaic of light, where the sky and architecture merge. It's my homage to the Impressionist painters who understood that light is the true subject of the painting.

José Antonio Martín Santos is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca and extensive experience in exhibitions and competitions. He primarily uses oil paints, as well as dry techniques such as charcoal, pastel, and Conté crayon, combining the rigor of academic drawing with loose and expressive brushstrokes within a figurative style attentive to detail and atmosphere. His works, focused on Mediterranean landscapes, the human figure, and still lifes, convey contemplation, silence, and wonder at the beauty of light, materials, and the everyday.
