Walking along Ibiza's most secluded coves, I often pause before rock formations that, for a moment, cease to be mere stones and become sculptures of light. This work was born from one of those encounters, where the midday sun beat down with such force that the rock seemed to burn in shades of ochre and pink.
In this piece, I decided that the material itself should be the true protagonist. Instead of seeking a defined line, I explored the 'skin'… of the island through bold, impasto, and loose brushstrokes. I wanted to capture not only what I saw, but also the vibration of the heat and the sound of the water lapping against the stone. It's a dialogue between the solid and the liquid: notice how the water isn't just blue, but is filled with reflections of the earth, creating a mosaic of brushstrokes that seem to dance across the canvas.
José Antonio Martín Santos is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca and extensive experience in exhibitions and competitions. He primarily uses oil paints, as well as dry techniques such as charcoal, pastel, and Conté crayon, combining the rigor of academic drawing with loose and expressive brushstrokes within a figurative style attentive to detail and atmosphere. His works, focused on Mediterranean landscapes, the human figure, and still lifes, convey contemplation, silence, and wonder at the beauty of light, materials, and the everyday.
