About this artwork
This piece was born from my walks around the port of Ibiza, in those calm moments when time seems to stand still before the island fully awakens. I was captivated by the sight of this boat, a symbol of tradition and craftsmanship, resting on waters that, more than liquid, seemed like a mirror of light.
In the background, the silhouette of Dalt Vila rises like a silent witness to history, bathed in those warm, violet hues that only the light of this… island can bestow. In this work, I decided to move away from rigid detail in order to seek out the 'atmosphere'. I wanted the paint itself to be the protagonist: that's why I used a loose, undone, and bold brushstroke, especially in the reflections on the water, where the color breaks down in an almost abstract way.
I didn't simply want to paint a ship; I wanted to paint the feeling of being there, the smell of sea air, and the peace of the morning. This work will fill any space with harmony and freshness, evoking the tranquility we all need.
José Antonio Martín Santos is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca and extensive experience in exhibitions and competitions. He primarily uses oil paints, as well as dry techniques such as charcoal, pastel, and Conté crayon, combining the rigor of academic drawing with loose and expressive brushstrokes within a figurative style attentive to detail and atmosphere. His works, focused on Mediterranean landscapes, the human figure, and still lifes, convey contemplation, silence, and wonder at the beauty of light, materials, and the everyday.
