About this artwork
The monarch butterflies have flown south from the cold north to overwinter. The cold, shown here in the ice crystals in the foreground of the picture, still holds her slightly captive. They hang tightly packed like a cluster of frozen butterflies around a pine tree at 3000 m in the Sierra Nevada of Mexico.
A spring sun, which is still weak, makes some wings tremble slightly. The warmth is soon communicated to everyone - the awakening in movement… increases. The red of the top of the wing shines more and more.
The monarch in the middle of the picture is the first to be hit by the heat, and he instinctively spreads his wings.
The dynamic of the awakening is convincing, only possible thanks to the warmth that breathes life back into what has become frozen.
