About this artwork
A fig tree in the Azores. Its gigantic root system creates its own scenery: vertical roots act like planks, intertwined under and over strives from the trunk. Where sunlight hits the whimsical root formations, they shimmer a cool jade green. They look harsh and unreal.
The "Monarch" butterfly represents the absolute contrast to this. Its bright red testifies to warmth. The wings are light and fragile. He who is not earthbound will soon take to the… skies and fly away - towards the light. Or will he rest again in the darkness of the tree?
Fascinating contrasts of hard-fragile, dark and light - no opposing opposites, but in harmony.
