About this artwork
According to tradition, a young carpenter is "on the road". He is walking along a wide track through flat farmland. It is noticeably quiet, but the clouds in the sky herald a change.
The sky is split in two: on the left two small clouds are moving away. They look like a heart that is moving away. The loving heart of the young man? In the happy moment still a strong blue. But soon lost and overwhelmed by the threat that is approaching.
The storm-whipped… cloud formation is the main protagonist of this picture. Shreds of clouds are torn high into the sky - the storm is almost palpable. Is a thunderstorm approaching or will the weather calm down? The landscape and the people, however, are still untouched...
The exciting contrast between calm and storm is what makes it so dramatic. People are characterized by the courage to walk against the storm, but at the same time they also hope that it will quickly pass...
