About this artwork
This half-relief was an architectural surprise on a hike. It adorns the entrance façade of a simple little church on a mountain path on the Peljesac peninsula (Croatia) and was originally used as a holy water font.
This artistic implementation, measuring 50 x 70 cm, surpasses the original in limestone. A scallop shell, fanned out in many different ways, shines between two mini-pilasters decorated with different floral motifs, chains and tassels.… It is surrounded at the top by a wide band with floral motifs. A stump of a column is incorporated into the middle of the band. It bears the main motif: a depiction of Christ, his right hand raised in blessing, his left hand holding the globe.
The blessing BENEDIC DOMINE HUNC MUNDUM encircles the huge globe, which rests in an amphitheater-like depression in the lower half of the picture. A masterly, detailed work that should enlighten our century...
