About this artwork
As always and everywhere, long hikes offer breathtaking views and open up new perspectives. These are particularly spectacular when we find ourselves – as here – on the hills overlooking Lake Maggiore (Italy).
Some of the ravines on these moraine slopes, however, should remain hidden from view – the abyss of the plateau on which my village lies is too deep. The basilica, towering over the small houses, is enormous and imposing. The lake seems to… lie very close by – the 700-meter difference in altitude is no obstacle to the view...
His gaze wanders over to the Lombardy side with its mountains, graduated in shades of blue. Mountains that inspire longing, but also represent the hardship of survival.
The scene of timeless stillness inherent in the image is opened by the ancient guardian of life in the village, a sweet chestnut tree. Its branching structure conveys dynamism, while its graphic execution presents a striking contrast – a monument created by both nature and the axe.
