About this artwork
A little off the beaten track in my mountain village in Piedmont (Italy), this one stands next to some abandoned rustici. Its staircase is so impressive that the walls are only faintly hinted at.
We climb these dry-stoned stairs, made of natural stone from the moraine slopes. The stones are of various shapes and colors: simply collected, unhewn, polished, and split. Assembled with great craftsmanship, they tell stories of tired feet and poverty… for centuries.
Sometimes minerals glitter. But most of all, the light, the warmth of the room, shines brightly. For the old chestnut door stands open - we're invited... to polenta?
The symbolism touches the viewer: The staircase represents a path, hardship, the achievement of a goal, a dream—even if it's just the warmth of the fireplace...
