About this artwork
This small, square egg tempera painting shows the twinkling weight and lightness of a dream hovering over a sleeping woman.
The painting is on an oak panel prepared with gesso. The figure of the woman is sculpted in low relief in the gesso and then painted in deep, warm blue egg tempera paint, made by hand grinding pigments in egg yolk. The space above the woman is filled with gold leaf, applied by the traditional method of water gilding. This… has been decorated with thousands of tiny, round punch marks to create a magical, sparkling effect which changes with the light.
The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached, so that it is ready to hang.
This painting was selected for the Dourdan Salon de Printemps 2022.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
