About this artwork
This painting, in hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on an oak panel, shows the first man being raised from the clay of the earth, drawn into life by the power of the glittering sun in the upper left. It can be read as a religious painting, illustrating the moment in Genesis when man is created, but it also represents the discovery of the remains of the first people in African soil and the wonder of the emergence of modern humans.
The man… himself is modelled in low relief so that his body literally emerges from the panel, his ribs being pulled up into the empty world. The sun and its rays are incised and punched into the gold ground so that they sparkle in the light.
The painting is signed and dated on the back and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang. The dimensions given include a 0.5cm exposed wood border around the image, which allows the painting to be displayed unframed, if desired. It should be noted that this painting has a very slight concave warp.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
