In this miniature painting the artist uses the bending of the ear of wheat, the curve of the mouse's tail and the twist of its body to achieve a pleasing, sinuous composition, full of movement, that contrasts with the enclosing square frame.
The ear of wheat stands proud of the painted surface, modelled in pastiglia and coated with gold leaf. The mouse is delicately painted in earth colours and white, exploiting the famous luminosity of the egg… tempera technique to create a sense of freshness and vivacity.
The dimensions given include the distressed oak frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork. The painting is signed on the back and a hook has been attached so that the painting is ready to hang, although it can equally well be displayed on a mini easel, on a bookshelf or mantelpiece.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
