This painting is inspired by Paolo Uccello's 'The Hunt in the Forest'. I pay tribute to that painting by using materials and techniques typical of the medieval period, including a wooden panel prepared with gesso, gold leaf and historical pigments ground in egg yolk tempera.
I have tried to capture a sense of urgent movement and the breathless nature of the hunt, the dogs turning on themselves as the rabbit darts between them and dashes out of… the frame. At the same time, the composition and rendering of the animals is highly decorative, recalling medieval tapestries and illuminated letters.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork. A hook has been attached at the back so that the painting is ready to hang, but it can equally well be displayed on a mini easel on a shelf or desk.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
