This small, vertical, framed painting has an illustrative feel and shows a stylised, warm green cypress tree teaming with life. Monkeys scamper over the branches, a snake slithers up the trunk and an owl looks on as squirrels and rabbits busy themselves around the base. A golden moon glows above the image and the background of blue azurite laid over vine black gives an intimate illumination to the fairy tale scene.
The painting is executed using… historical techniques, with dry pigments hand-ground in egg yolk tempera. The golden elements are water gilded onto the chalk priming, prepared with bole. Tooling has been used to create shimmering scales along the snake and, on the butterflies, the gold ground is allowed to glimmer through the red and black paint to give a sheen.
The dimensions given include the black frame, which is fixed and forms part of the artwork. The painting is signed and dated on the back and a picture wire has been attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
