In this painting, I have used materials and techniques typical of the middle ages: hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a wooden panel, prepared with gesso. In this way, I recall the religious painting of the period, investing my subject matter with an aura of spirituality and mystery.
The colours and atmosphere of the painting pay tribute to Paolo Uccello's 'The Hunt in the Forest' and Pisanello's 'The Vision of St. Eustace'. Although… the subject can be interpreted as a secular, woodland subject, it is also a representation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden - Eve about to take a bite of the apple, while Adam is unaware of the disaster in waiting.
The tree is painted in verdigris over gold leaf, scratched through to create sparkling, golden leaves. The atmospheric background has been created by painting blue azurite, a semi-precious stone used as a pigment, over solid black.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
