About this artwork
'The Hunt' is inspired by late medieval painting, in particular Uccello's 'The Hunt in the Forest' and Pisanello's 'The Vision of St. Eustace'. I have attempted to preserve their feeling of darkness and intimacy under the forest canopy, while telling a new story in a style of my own. In this painting I was particularly keen to convey the frantic movement and intense emotions of the hunt in the egg tempera medium, which, in contemporary painting,…
is more often associated with static compositions.
The painting is made using gold leaf and historical pigments, such as verdigris and azurite, hand-ground in egg yolk tempera, applied to a lime wood panel prepared with gesso. The dimensions given include the fixed frame.
The painting is signed on the back and a picture wire has been attached so that it is ready to hang.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
