About this artwork
This painting celebrates the huge variety of life in the sea. The ultramarine blue water bursts with a surfeit of creatures colourful, beautiful and strange. The tentacles of a huge octopus embrace shoals of fish, a squid, a turtle, a shark, a nautilus, a sea urchin and countless others, all nourished by the power of the golden sun, hanging at the top of the picture. The image is packed and full of tiny detail, repaying close observation.
The painting… is rendered in hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on an oak panel, using methods typical of medieval Europe. The golden sun has been punched to create a sparkling effect as the light across the painting changes.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
