This painting was inspired by a detail of the Westminster Retable. I was lucky enough to be present in the conservation studio during work on this outstanding and rare survival from medieval England. The exquisite terrestrial orb held in Christ's hand in the centre of the painting made a lasting impression on me. In this miniature I have tried to capture the variety and joy of the natural world in a delicate sphere, giving it a sense of precious… fragility.
In homage to the Westminster retable, I have used materials and techniques authentic to the medieval period, including an oak panel, gold leaf and historical pigments hand-ground ground in egg tempera.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
