About this artwork
Smiley VI belongs to my series "Smear Board," in which I examine familiar pictorial symbols and the loss of their apparent clarity. The smiley is one of the simplest symbols of our time: two eyes and a curved mouth are enough to immediately convey joy and friendliness.
In Smiley VI, this symbol remains fully intact, but its surface tells a different story. The light face bears stains, traces of paint, smudges, and visible rework. The two dark eyes… differ slightly from each other, while the broad smile almost demonstratively clings to its original meaning.
This contradiction intrigues me. Can a symbol still convey joy if its order is already compromised?
Smiley VI oscillates between humor and irritation, lightness and uncertainty. The familiar symbol remains – but its clear message begins to waver.
