Smiley VII belongs to the "Smear Board" series, in which I explore familiar symbols and the loss of their self-evidence. The smiley face is one of the most recognizable symbols of our time and represents optimism and positive emotions.
The smile remains, but the surface tells a different story. Layers of paint, reworkings, and visible traces of the painting process permeate the image. What initially appears simple and familiar gradually becomes… fragile.
I'm interested in the moment when a symbol continues to function, yet its meaning becomes uncertain. The smiley remains recognizable, but its certainty begins to waver.
Between symbolic imagery and expressive oil painting, Smiley VII reflects the fragility of certainties and the mutability of familiar signs.
