Smiley V belongs to my "Scrapboard" series, in which I explore familiar symbols and their transformation. The smiley face is one of the most recognizable symbols of our time. It represents joy, agreement, and optimism. Precisely because its meaning seems so immediate, it is particularly well-suited to the questions posed by this series.
In this painting, the symbol remains clearly recognizable, yet appears less unambiguous than usual. The bright… surface, visible traces of the painting process, and numerous layers lend the motif an unexpected fragility. Behind the smile, a tension arises between familiarity and uncertainty.
I'm interested in the moment when a universally understood symbol loses its self-evidence. The smiley face remains a symbol, but becomes more open to different interpretations. What initially seems simple develops a greater emotional depth.
