About this artwork
With my series "Smear Board," I explore how familiar symbols can lose their apparent certainty. The flower is one of the simplest pictorial symbols of all. Everyone recognizes it immediately, yet it is precisely this self-evidence that interests me.
In Flower II, the form remains clearly recognizable as the painting process begins to transform it. Luminous colors, visible traces of the painting process, and spontaneous decisions lend the motif… a special openness. The flower appears vibrant and light, without being confined to a single, definitive meaning.
I am interested in the moment when a familiar symbol loses its self-evidence. It remains a flower – and simultaneously becomes an open pictorial space in which perception, memory, and personal experiences become more important than fixed meanings.
