Ennui can have many causes, but possibly the worst is that that is enforced by factors beyond your control - physical or mental illness, perhaps even powerlessness.
I once experienced a time when I was bored (I know it is said that only boring people get bored). It undermined my motivation. I was listless and purposeless. It made me very unhappy. Fortunately I was able to recover my lust for life, but some people are less fortunate and remain paralysed… by inertia - sleepwalking their way through life.
