About this artwork
I am of an age when I avoid mirrors - they don't reflect me as I feel I am.
I am occasionally asked to paint someone's portrait. You may think this unsurprising, as I paint people - but the people in my paintings don't exist. Yes, I use models, but I am not after a likeness - I am after a 'look'. A 'look' that hopefully expresses something of the feeling that underlies my motivation for making the image. I have never succumbed to requests to accept… a commission, no matter how generous the financial inducement. Portraiture just doesn't interest me. It is supremely hard to please myself and the thought of trying to please someone else fills me with dread.
