About this artwork
With the work “The Philosopher” I wanted to pay homage to Hypatia of Alexandria, a symbol of the fight for truth and justice, and it wants to be a warning against obscurantism and violence. The choice to represent Hypatia at the moment in which she is about to be sacrificed in the name of religion is extremely strong and full of meaning. The position of the woman, tied like a martyr ready for torture, inevitably evokes the image of the crucifix,…
creating a parallel between the persecution of knowledge and the sacrifice generated by religious fanaticism. Hypatia's suffering expression conveys a sense of profound anguish and impotence in the face of the brutality of violence. The work thus becomes a cry of accusation against the fear of knowledge on the part of power.
