The tubular root is a homage to the complexity of naturally grown root wood. A hazelnut root was recovered in many steps, dried, freed of soil, freed of stone inclusions and presented vertically. To reduce the mass and increase the translucency, all branches growing from the root were drilled out in a tube-like manner. The front and back views are equally attractive. The entire object was finally treated with a milky white wood protection patina.…
The tubular root shows a strong, dynamic movement and is abstractly reminiscent of a "Medusa" depiction. The work belongs to the "tender traces of violence" series, as the process of creation involved engraving and milling in a similarly rustic, yet "fine-motor" manner. Here, too, we find many corresponding traces of work, rough tools as a deliberate texture in the surface.
Olli Marschall works primarily with wood as a medium, occasionally combining metal and resin, and has a rich background in painting and sculpture. His technique is characterized by abstract, intuitive, and carefully planned processes, using tools such as chainsaws with virtuosity and drawing skills. His sculptures combine raw traces of work with harmonious structures and an innovative use of leftover materials. Marschall's works exude lightness, carelessness, and a childlike wonder, inviting the viewer to curious discovery on multiple levels.
