About this artwork
The shell consists primarily of calcium carbonate and is formed by the mantle tissue. It protects the mussel from predators, dehydration, and mechanical influences. Its shape also supports water flow for feeding. The shell is thus a central component of the mussel's survival strategy.
The formation of growth grooves on the shell also allows conclusions to be drawn about the age and environmental conditions during the mussel's lifetime.
The mussel… shell was photographed one last time on black and white film before it was dissolved (pulverized) and mixed with a photographic emulsion after pulverization.
The light-sensitive emulsion was applied to the paper support and coated with the
previously made negative exposed in original size and then developed and fixed.
Object and photograph are now one!
Paul Gross’ photographs have been extensively exhibited in both Germany and Japan. Within his art, he explores and expands the limits of classic photography. The relationship between photography and object plays an important role in all of Gross’ work. Using various techniques and equipment, including movement and exposure time, objects in his pieces can appear abstract and bizarre. Thereby the object loses its function as a “memory aid”, blurring the definition and limitations of the medium.
