About this artwork
The tissue paper handkerchief is one of the oldest disposable products in the world. This often overlooked item was used in China around 2,000 years ago and was made of hemp paper.
A used tissue contains the user's DNA, their pathogens, particulate matter from the ambient air, possibly blood, and much more. Used tissues store a wealth of personal information. For example, paternity can be proven, and murderers have been identified, even decades… later.
The paper support of the photo emulsion was made from the deformed paper handkerchief shown in the picture.

« "Photography is not an image of reality." »
Paul Gross’ photographs have been extensively exhibited in both Germany and Japan. Within his art, he explores and expands the limits of classic photography. The relationship between photography and object plays an important role in all of Gross’ work. Using various techniques and equipment, including movement and exposure time, objects in his pieces can appear abstract and bizarre. Thereby the object loses its function as a “memory aid”, blurring the definition and limitations of the medium.
