About this artwork
This work continues my exploration of our relationship with the environment. It uses the Venus of Willendorf as a metaphorical figure and container for our planet. The original figurine, only 10 cm tall, was discovered in 1908 and dates to about 24,000 BCE. Often interpreted as a symbol of fertility and Mother Earth, it represents nature's abundance and capacity to sustain life.
Although we are increasingly aware of the ecological crisis, we continue… to exploit the Earth at an unprecedented scale. One Venus is cast in pigmented resin with gold, silver, and oil-like surfaces, referencing our dependence on precious metals and fossil fuels. The second transforms the Venus into an open-pit mine, her body hollowed out by extraction. Together, the sculptures contrast the Earth's life-giving abundance with the destructive consequences of resource exploitation.
