About this artwork
This one is the same birches, told in a different register. Where its companion held green and gold, this transfer settles into earth browns, umber, ochre, the deep tones of bark stripped of its spring colour. The same crackle paste sits beneath the surface, and the same photograph of birches was transferred over it, so the fracture lines still run through the trunks. But the mood shifts entirely. This feels like autumn's end, or something older…
than season altogether.
It belongs to Sustain, twenty-five pieces I made in 2013 thinking about endurance, what holds its shape and what wears down. I did not have the word Ipseity yet, the enduring self beneath change, but I was already circling it here, in the vertical repetition of trunks that each remain distinct within the crowd. This piece, together with its green companion, is a direct ancestor of Quietude, the large-scale work shown in About Time in 2026.
I never titled it. Left unnamed, it keeps its own counsel.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
